From the moment I landed in Malta, I got why people rave about it; the island is stunning— whether you’re exploring medieval streets, lounging by the sea, or indulging in some seriously good food and wine. Check out the island’s only two Michelin stars restaurant ‘ION’, and the local grapes Grenache, Girgentina, and Gellewza which oenophiles are going gaga for. It’s got oodles of culture and laid-back charm that makes it easy to fall in love with.
But beyond the bright lights and celebrity sightings, Malta’s rich past is definitely worth exploring. If you’re keen to learn about ancient history, the Mnajdra Temples are a must. These megalithic structures, built over 5,000 years ago, are older than Stonehenge and the Pyramids and offer an awe-inspiring glimpse into prehistoric ingenuity. These megalithic structures were - remove as already used megalithic… Meticulously aligned to capture the sun’s movements during the equinoxes and solstices, showcasing the sophistication of Malta’s early inhabitants. For something a little quirkier, Popeye Village is a must. Originally a movie set for the 1980 film ‘Popeye’, it’s now a theme park nestled in a quiet cove. You can wander through the colorful wooden houses, catch a show, or just enjoy the views of the glistening sea. However it’s not all about the main attractions; staying outside the more popular tourist hubs allowed me to experience a more laid-back side of the island and soak up Malta’s often neglected, rural charm. My hotel for the duration was the delightful Village Boutique & Spa in Naxxar. A hidden gem, set in a converted farmhouse.
