Millionair Winter 2025

Arriving into Lamu is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. Landing in a small prop plane onto the island of Manda, you’re immediately met with a feeling of calm. This sandy island has no cars; instead, you’re taken by boat across the channel to the magical island of Shela. Lamu like no other

We stayed at Peponi, a beautiful, traditional hotel overlooking the sea. The rooms are simple and tastefully decorated in Swahili style — huge wooden beds draped in mosquito nets, polished concrete bathrooms, woven baskets and hammam towels. The hotel also has one of the best restaurants and bars on the island. People gather here in the evenings to sit, chat and meet. It’s mixed crowd, young and old, all happily talking and sipping beautiful cocktails. The pace is slow: bare feet, long flowing dresses, men in kikoys wrapped around their waists, salty hair.
