Wandering into Shela town feels like stepping back in time. The streets are narrow, children play outside, and boutique shops sit alongside local food stores. People smile, greet you warmly and welcome you inside without any pressure. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and slow. You can also take a boat to Lamu Old Town, which has a more local, historic feel. Masai warriors sell handcrafted pieces along Shela beach — everything from wood carvings to leather belts and jewellery. The traditional Mozambique dhows offer sunset cruises with food and drinks on board. You set sail in the evening, lie back and watch the sky turn gold before returning to your hotel on Shela island. Seafood, samosas and curries are everywhere here, along with sweet exotic fruits and fresh salads. Come for a few days or come for two weeks — you’ll leave feeling like every bone in your body has softened. Your mind will be clear, your breath slower, your whole pace reset. If there’s one place that truly teaches you how to unwind, it’s Lamu.
