GOING BRAC IN TIME

Cayman Brac’s quiet call to a past filled with legacy and lore During my most recent winter escape to Grand Cayman, I felt the pull of something a bit quieter, but wilder—a whisper of adventure that led me to board a short flight to the smaller, more secluded sister island called Cayman Brac, home to just 2,000. Although not as utterly remote as Little

Cayman, with its mere 200 residents, Cayman Brac exudes a Cast Away vibe that feels thrilling and untamed. Together, these three islands form a trifecta—a jewel in the British West Indies, just a stone’s throw from Cuba. Once a forgotten corner of the British Empire—isolated, unknown, uninhabited—these archipelagos have transformed into a coveted leisure haven. While its pristine beauty, vibrant marine ecosystems, and white sand beaches draw travelers from far and wide, Grand Cayman’s status as the fifth-largest global banking epicenter hums discreetly in the background. Yet, for the more ‘low-key’ Cayman Brac, luxury entwines effortlessly with the simplicity of island life, creating an alchemy of quiet indulgence and ease— and, perfect for my winter holiday.

Cayman Brac, a slender 14 miles long and 2 miles wide, can be circled by car in a leisurely 30 minutes. Its rugged terrain, dramatic coastal bluffs, and rich biodiversity make it a canvas of natural wonders—untouched color-rich reefs teem with life, shipwrecks that harken back to the Golden Age of Piracy (or, at the very least, a poetic nod to pirate lore), and stunning topography that unfurls in scenic splendor. Despite its remoteness, there’s no shortage of ways to fill your days, whether traveling solo or with loved ones. Explore bat caves (an unexpected beauty I wouldn’t normally seek out), scale cliffs, snorkel in crystalline waters, or dive into one of the world’s most breathtaking underwater realms—for which Cayman Brac is so known. The island feels like your own private island, a place where time slows and the outside world fades. Here, the frenetic pulse of banking and commerce is nowhere to be found—Cayman Brac is a retreat to unwind, to breathe, and to be 'unseen.’
