music scene in our respective countries. It was a normal part of life to cross the border and adding some excitement to our weekends as was driving with my mother to Courmayeur, an Alpine resort in northwest Italy, at the foot of Mont Blanc with views of the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa. I was brought up with three different cultures, yet similar in some ways and then I moved to London to be immersed in the exciting new street fashion trends it offered which I wanted to be part of. The reality of Brexit has put this into a new perspective and although I never thought about this before, I am an immigrant, proud to be one, and grateful to call the UK one of my homes.

Unapologetically ME…

Ruby Hammer MBE Beauty Editor

Shot on iPhone 11 #filterdrop

MY mantra for 2021 is to be wholeheartedly 'unapologetically me' ... no New Year, New Me, no resolutions ... just taking the time to be myself and encouraging others to do the same. 2020 has been a tumultuous life changing year globally, heightening emotions and enlarging perspective of who and what we are. When you pay attention to yourself, your bod y, your skin, your face ... you will know what cosmetics, skincare, pampering is right for you. Without having access to all the professionals, you must become your own expert. I have always said you need to build that knowledge of yourself to really understand what you would like from seeing an expert, we all have very different views on what we consider beautiful so knowing yourself is key. Since being a teenager, I have had a grooming routine in place and in 2021 I will continue to embrace it, adapting where required as the seasons change. Taking the time to understand where my knowledge gaps are, what products I veer towards and where my needs have changed. I won't be led by trends but instead trust myself using a combination of tried and tested products which I already love, interspersed with new products from brands I love or with ingredients that I know will give me a boost.

LUXURY HANDBAG DESIGNER AND SWAROVSKI FAMILY SCION

Marina Raphael ON COMBINING TRADITION WITH INNOVATION

By Contributing Editor Juliet Herd

Less than two years out of university, Marina Raphael is already running her own eponymous accessories brand, selling exquisitely crafted luxury handbags to the global glitterati and forging intriguing collaborations that ensure she stays well ahead of fickle fashion trends. Born and raised in Athens, Greece, Marina, 22, a business management graduate of King's College London, always knew she would take an entrepreneurial career path. As a member of the Swarovski family on her Swiss-Austrian mother's side, she shares her illustrious forebears' passion for creativity and design, combined with a strong work ethic. She chose to design handbags because, as she explains, "they can be used by everyone, regardless of age or size", with an emphasis on timeless quality, structured shapes and sustainability. In a nod to her heritage, Marina's Italian-made bags also incorporate Swarovski crystals in innovative and eye-catching ways. One of her most striking new designs is the miniature Evangelie in Crystal party bag - born out of a collaboration between the designer and her friend, Greek art director and influencer Evangelie Smyrniotaki - which is composed of a single mesh panel encrusted with more than 5000 Swarovski crystals. As well as its signature architectural and geometric shapes, the brand is known for its use of natural materials, such as napa leather, straw, suede, bamboo and eco-wool. As Marina says, her bags

are investment pieces, which is one of the reasons they have continued to fly off the online shopping 'shelf' amid the pandemic and her brand has steadily grown in the face of a challenging market environment. "People expect a lot from their wardrobe now, and especially in this new climate, customers expect clothes to be multi-functional and durable more than ever:' explains Marina. "Our mini handbags fit in with the new lifestyle, where we tend to carry less when leaving our homes. We also found customers gravitating towards the escapist, fantasy side of the brand, too - our bags offer women the chance to dream about parties and sparkle. They were buying these pieces for the ultimate pick-me-up even if they had nowhere to go!" Marina Raphael can already boast an abundance of royal and celebrity fans, including Queen Maxima of the etherlands, Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece and her daughter Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece, model Candice Swanepoel, and international influencers such as Tiffany Hsu, Doina Ciobanu, Xenia Adonts and Caroline Vreeland. As multi-lingual Marina launches her spring/summer collection -inspired by her Greek childhood and holidays spent island-hopping in the Aegean -she tells MilliOnAir about her inspirational family, her commitment to slow fashion, and how, as a young entrepreneur, she is determined to overcome the doubters.

MilliOnAir magazine

Can you tell us a bit about your background and your childhood infiuences?

When did you first become interested in fashion?

"I am half Greek on my father's side, and half Swiss-Austrian from my mother's. Growing up, I was always influenced by my family's entrepreneurial background as well as the warmth and energy of the Greek people. I still live in Greece and have chosen to found my company here." How has your multi-cultural parentage infarmed your upbringing? Which languages do you speak? "I grew up with a very international mindset. From a very young age, my brother and I learnt to be open-minded and all-accepting. We also developed a love for exploration and travel, all thanks to our parents. I speak a total of five languages: Greek, Spanish, English, German and Italian. I learnt three of them from the start, as I spoke English at school, German with my mum and Greek with my dad. I then decided to learn Italian and Spanish to help with the company. Italian is essential for me as I love to be able to speak with our artisans in Florence who create our bags, on a much more personal level. I also travel to Italy a lot, taking an active part in the supply chain and production, so speaking the language is necessary for me.'' Through your mothef; you ) re a sixth-generation member of the Swarovski family. What does that heritage mean to you? "I am very proud to come from a family with such an entrepreneurial background and heritage. My exposure to the business and fashion world from a young age, sparked my curiosity and led me down a creative path. I try to pay my respects to that heritage through my brand on a daily basis; you will find a crystal in every creation, even if it may not be immediately obvious."

"I remember always being interested in fashion. My earliest memory would be when I was about six-years-old, sitting on the floor next to my mum [Anouchka] and helping her get dressed for parties and other outings. I loved combining her dresses with the right accessories and seeing the whole outfit come together. Growing up, my biggest inspirations were my mum and my grandma [Marina]. Their timeless sense of style and the way they exuded confidence are things that I truly admire to this day. Confidence can make an outfit and we always try to bring this to the Marina Raphael woman."

Did you always plan to pursue a career in fashion and design?

"Although I explored different creative paths as a child, such as drawing, beading and sewing, I wouldn't say that a career in fashion was 'meant to be'. I think it was more the entrepreneurial endeavours in general. It's an entrepreneurial mindset that drives me - I started an events business before I went to university. I think it's extremely important to understand that business and fashion run hand in hand. A successful brand is equal parts business and design. You have to set realistic goals, realistic budgets and have a strong strategy and company structure.' You have said you were inspired by the women in your family to start your company ... " Jot only are they my role models, they also became my muses as I was building my brand. They are strong, independent and caring. They are confident in their own skin and carry themselves with such poise and elegance. Their support throughout these two years has been immeasurable, as they not only choose to wear my bags, but they also encourage every step I take. I want to make every woman feel as special as they are."

MilliOnAir magazine

What prompted you to design handbags?

"Firstly, I wanted to make something that is inclusive, and can be worn and used by anyone. Secondly, I wanted it to be considered timeless; more of an investment piece. And lastly, I wanted to do this by following a sustainable path, using materials that are biodegradable, as well as techniques that are not only environmentally friendly, but that also support local communities. Handbags allow for a great

blend of fashion frivolity and expert knowledge -when done correctly!"

“I am very proud to come from a family with such an

entrepreneurial background and heritage.

You will find a crystal in every creation, even if it may not be immediately obvious”

MilliOnAir magazine

What have been the biggest challenges in launching your business?

How did your collaboration with Swarovski come about?

"The biggest challenge by far has been that people often assume that youth is linked with unprofessionalism."

"I have always loved crystals and always planned to incorporate them as a way of paying tribute to my heritage. The reason why I decided to work so closely with Swarovski, is that I trust in the precision of their work, and believe they are the perfect partner to oversee the quality control of my handbags."

Do you find that you have to prove yourself doubly because of your age and your family name? "I don't feel that I have to prove myself, but I do think that there are always people who are going to doubt your work, no matter what. In any case, I try to focus on my brand and do my part to live up to the name of the strong line of entrepreneurs that I come from by creating something meaningful:' As a young person, what qualities would you say you need to be able to succeed in such a competitive market? "I believe that in order to succeed in any market, not just the fashion industry, it is important to be driven, energetic, passionate and dedicated. A strong work ethic is so valuable and I always make sure the work speaks for itself before people judge my age. Also, you must be able to choose the right people to join your team, as well as be willing to overcome any obstacles you find along the way."

What do crystals mean to you?

"Crystals to me are associated with happiness, joy, and celebration. Incorporating them is my favourite part of the design process. Being able to make each customer feel glamorous with even the slightest touch of sparkle is what I love the most."

What have you learnt about yourself and what would you say drives you to succeed?

"Through this process I learned that I am very dedicated as a person, and that once I set my mind on something I work endlessly until I achieve it. What drives me is my passion to create accessories that empower every person wearing them."

What are some of the 'pinch me' moments you've experienced since launching?

"My first 'pinch me' moment was definitely when we received our first online purchase. There is no bigger compliment than when someone parts with their hard-earned money for something you created. Other moments that felt surreal included seeing Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, Candice Swanepoel, Giovanna Battaglia, and many other incredible women wearing our bags, along with my first cover story and being taken on by major retailers, such as Moda Operandi, LuisaViaRoma and Harrods."

Your designs are very distinctive with strong architectural references and structural shapes -what are your infiuences?

"I would say that travel has played a very important role regarding my architectural and cultural influences. Travel is the best gift anyone could give you. It opens your mind to new possibilities, new landscapes, new views, and of course, different cultures. I find myself drawn to the idea of juxtaposing textures that are really tactile but also have a degree of comfort, and thinking outside the box about ways to create an antithesis between the classic and the modern, just like you see old and new buildings within the same city or ancient artefacts within a contemporary museum."

How do you feel when you see one of your creations come to life?

"When the sketches turn into live prototypes, only one word could describe my feelings and that is: Excitement! The process itself is so long that it makes me happy to see the end result and reminds me how rewarding it is:'

Why did you decide to produce your bags in Florence?

"Italy has such a history of talented artisans and craftsmen so choosing to produce them there was a no-brainer. Everything is made by hand using centuries-old techniques. In order to really appreciate and distinguish a luxury product, it is important to pay attention to detail as you can tell if something is really luxurious by the very stich of the product. Plus, this dedication to quality is another strong way in which I believe the company is sustainable. Luxury is designed to last."

MilliOnAir magazine

Tell us more about your commitment to sustainability?

"The importance of sustainability was instilled in me from a very young age, as I grew up learning to appreciate the value of quality over quantity. My mother and grandmother also played a very important role in teaching me the importance of biodiversity and environmental conservation. My grandma is actually president of the Goulandris atural History Museum in Athens, and has dedicated her life to raising awareness about climate change:'

What steps have you taken as a brand to be as eco-friendly as possible?

"As a brand we support local artisans and craftsmen, responsibly source materials, integrate biodegradable components, as well as implement a near-zero-waste policy, which is achieved by recycling and upcycling all left-over materials:'

What more would you like to achieve in this area?

"I don't think that any brand can say with certainty that they are 100% sustainable. That being said, it doesn't mean we shouldn't all be working to become more sustainable. As a brand we try to do our part by not only offering more sustainable alternatives to existing best sellers (e.g. the Porter is a more sustainable than the Riviera bag) but we also constantly experiment with new materials, alternatives to leather, and fabrics that have a smaller environmental impact:'

How did the Porter bag come about?

"We collaborated with Maria Fernanda Hernandez Franco, head of sustainable projects and global communications at LuisaViaRoma, on the Porter bag, which is made from biodegradable leather and ecological wool. It was this collaboration that really got me thinking outside the box and gave me the idea of incorporating fabrics made of an ecological blend of wool and cashmere."

Your bags are investment pieces -who is the Marina Raphael woman?

"The Marina Raphael women is not defined by trends. She is timeless yet modern, regardless of age; carries herself with confidence and embraces her personal sense of style. She is international and often on-the-go, so the functionality and form of her handbag are essential."

You Jve got some amazing high-profile fans. What does their support and endorsement mean to you?

"It's incredibly heart-warming to see people with such an incredible sense of style showing such love for the brand. The fact that these elegant and influential women have chosen my brand, is truly an honour. Of course, all the women in my family own a Marina Raphael handbag."

What do you like to do to relax?

"What relaxes me the most is going on mountain hikes with my dogs. This helps me to clear my mind:'

Shirlie Kemp My passions

Interview by Marella Martinelli

M illi O n A ir magazine

''Ever since I can remember, I've had a love for gardens and flowers, in fact my grandmother wanted to call me Fleur when I was born''

We met up with the multitalented Shirlie and chatted about her journey in life and her many passions.

How did you start in the music business?

Aged 18, my two best friends George and Andrew formed a band. They asked if I would help them do a PA. I had never performed before and I loved the idea. Within a year we became one of the most successful groups of the 80’s and I was lucky to keep performing with them all around the world. That band was....Wham! What were some of the aspects that you enjoyed the most about being in a band? Travelling, it changed me as a person. It opened up my eyes to other cultures and left me with a more open mind about the world.

M illi O n A ir magazine

How did Pepsi & Shirlie come about?

When Wham split, Pepsi and I decided to create our own group ''Pepsi & Shirlie'', our first release reached number 2 in the UK charts. I love the fashion side of being in a group and we designed our clothes with a very talented lady called Susanne Rose and within months we were selling our designs in Top Shop! After a while I wanted a more simple life. When you are constantly travelling it has an effect on you and all I wanted was a home and family. My boyfriend was also in a very successful band at the same time so when I wasn’t working, I’d have to get on a flight to see him.

M illi O n A ir magazine

What happened after life in the band?

I did get married and have the family I wanted and home but when my children were growing up my creative side felt empty and lost. In 2012 I bought myself a camera and started setting up little shoots and I created a blog. Most of my images were very romantic, full of vintage China and lace, things I had bought when shopping either at vintage fairs or at Portobello market. I found a blog that I loved and the images were so romantic and magical that I sent a message to the lady, saying that if she ever wants to do a shoot I’ll do it with her. She sent a message back asking if I could do something in a week for a US magazine ( she lived in Santa Barbara California). I wasn’t doing it to earn money but because I craved to do something creative.

What is a simple way to find happiness?

My advice is ... find your passion and try and make a living out of it because even if you don’t earn a fortune you are doing something you love and people don’t realise what a true blessing that is. I have done lots of what I love in my life ... dancing ... singing... designing and even wrote a book about my life ! If you would like to know more it’s all in my book called ‘It’s A Love Story ‘.

Limité is the French word for limited, representing every piece in this collection - past, present and future. Inspiration comes from the precious stones selected; their colours and shapes evoke thoughts and images that eventually after hundreds of hours of design and creation, manifest in the pieces shown below. Each design is one of a kind, unique in every way and never to be created again; a truly exquisite collector’s item.

SO RUBY With an art deco feel and surrounded with lively round brilliant diamonds, the striking contrast between the stupendous cabochon rubies and the stunning oval rubies at the stud are what makes these drop earrings so unique.

WOO ME Delicate and feminine featuring a plush pink heart shape ruby, set on an individually hand set round brilliant diamond chain..

RUBY TWIST Oval and round rubies highlighted with round brilliant diamonds that have been expertly set to create this oval shape. The dome shape studs are comprised of round rubies and diamonds and the design allows the main feature to twist gently with the wearer’s movements.

PEAR DROPS Elegant pear shape emeralds in a lovely light tone, suspended from bespoke soft corner trillion cut diamond studs and sprinkled with round brilliant diamonds making these drop earrings dance when worn.

DREAMS IN GREEN Serene sea-green oval cut emeralds expertly set, separated and framed by sparkling round brilliant diamonds, this design allows for a beautiful flow of movement throughout the bracelet, connected with the most elegant diamond closure.

FLOATING EMERALDS EMERALD AND DIAMOND RING

Vibrant emerald cut emeralds in a youthful green hue, complemented with lively round brilliant diamonds, the discerning design gives the illusion the emeralds are floating when worn.

Couture behind the scenes The Creation of a look Alexander McQueen Behind the scene of Spring Summer Couture 2021 By Marcella Martinelli

A n oyster ruffle dress with a high neck and scalloped back in washed organza dip-dyed in pink and black. The original toile for this dress was cut in the home of a member of the womenswear design team and the finished look was initially planned in lace. As the collection progressed it evolved into an oyster ruffled dress, created in layers of organza. This piece was constructed in entirely recycled materials sourced from existing fabric stock. Many trials took place to research

the density and scale of the ruffles required to achieve the degradé effect. The creation of the ruffles is labour- intensive: every circle of organza was cut by hand.

The creation of the ruffles is labour-intensive: every circle of organza was cut by hand. To achieve the undulating effect on the finished piece, the panels of ruffles were not stitched on in straight rows, instead following organic, waving lines. The technicians machining the individual organza circles to the skirt stitched them following these waves, stitching row by row until the pattern indicated a change in circle size, therefore achieving the degradé scale effect.Upon completion, the dying process required the piece to be taken apart to achieve the precise effect. It was then re- assembled.

T he inspiration for this look was an oversized 1950s couture bow, re-imagined and spliced into a tuxedo jacket. A double-layered tuxedo jacket in black wool silk with a wrapped bow peplum in pink and cigarette trousers. The bow looks like it was threaded through the jacket. Experiments took place at home with a design team member working in calico to create the bow proportion and the peplum. The bow was toiled in several different sizes before the final version was chosen. photographs by Chloé le Drezen

T he toile was created and worked on in the homes of the Alexander McQueen design team. Dip-dying experiments took place in gardens and kitchens. The bodice was hand-knotted, pleated and sewn onto the corset. A dress with off-the-shoulder drape and a tiered skirt in washed silk organza dip-dyed in pink and black. Once the basic structure of the piece was finalised, the dress was taken apart to be dip-dyed.
